Ghana Announces Citizenship Drive the African Diaspora

Ghana Citizenship Drive 2026

The Government of Ghana has officially announced a renewed Citizenship Drive for members of the Historic African Diaspora, marking an important development in the ongoing movement toward identity restoration and reconnection.

This initiative reaffirms Ghana’s stated commitment to welcoming descendants of the transatlantic slave trade and members of the global African diaspora seeking formal recognition, belonging, and legal integration within the Republic of Ghana.

At The African Diaspora Group (ADG), we recognize this moment as more than administrative policy. It represents continued progress in the broader journey of diaspora return, restoration, and reconciliation.

Who Is Eligible?

This citizenship drive applies to members of the Historic African Diaspora — descendants of Africans displaced through the transatlantic slave trade and related systems of forced migration.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate established ties to Ghana and meet eligibility requirements outlined by the Ministry of the Interior and the Diaspora Affairs Office at the Office of the President.

Key Requirements

Under the Diaspora Registration pathway, applicants are required to submit:

  • 2-year legal residency in Ghana
  • Birth certificate
  • Police clearance from both home country and Ghana
  • Bio-data page of a valid passport
  • Headshot
  • Application fee of GHS 25,000 (paid upon approval)

A Broader Context: Identity Restoration

Citizenship is not merely a legal designation. For many within the historic African diaspora, it is a formal acknowledgment of belonging — a recognition of ancestry, identity, and unfinished historical journeys.

The African Diaspora Group remains committed to advocating for fair and accessible pathways, providing verified updates, supporting diaspora members through reintegration, and advancing identity restoration initiatives across the continent.

25,000 GHC is a ridiculous amount and another apparent money grab. Ghana should be ashamed.
